Sports Prophecy
More than 25 years ago this Sports Prophecy column said the Minnesota Vikings would win the 1989 Super Bowl. That didn’t happen, nor have they won since.
Biblical prophecies weren’t always specific to a year either, however, so we still remain confident forecasting that someday, maybe many more years from now, the Vikings will get their trophy.
This Sports Prophecy isn’t throwing stones at the former regime by noting that missed prediction either. Since the staff turnover this column once predicted the Seattle Mariners would win a World Series. And we’re not really sure that will actually ever occur.
But, on with the guessing games! That’s what you keep subscribing to Pietisten for a century, isn’t it? Below, our look at what’s coming in 2025 and 2026...
If we aren’t picking the Mariners for the World Series, let’s go with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That seems probable!
40-year-old LeBron James wins another NBA championship with the Lakers, signs up to play another decade!
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are WNBA champions.
The next Caitlin Clark is currently playing high school for the Crosby-Ironton Rangers and is named Tori Oehrlein (hat tip to Phil Johnson for this one and his scouting of 2A hoops in central Minnesota).
Canadians will keep rolling against Americans in hockey. The Toronto Maple Leaves win the Stanley Cup, and Canada takes 2026 Olympic gold in Italy.
The Bellevue Presbyterian church softball team has a great season and wins almost half their games. It will be a successful season as long as we beat the Regulators and the Goose Pub.
The weather prediction: some days hot, some cold…most temps will be in-between.
The SEC bounces back from an off year, and Georgia beats Tennessee in the college football championship game.
And now for the Minnesota Vikings (reprinted with slight updates from the Fall 1988 issue.) This looks like it could finally be the Vikings’ year. After coming within a few games of the Super Bowl last season, Minnesota seems poised to make the trip in 1989 2026. And, I think, contrary to their history, they will win the big one this time.
